PROGRAMS,
EVENTS & MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS
ANNUAL FALL CONVENTION
Our chapter hosts an Annual Fall Convention in Columbia, SC. With an
outstanding faculty from across the nation, this is an excellent opportunity
for our members and their students to take classes and polish their skills.
Members also socialize, share problems and solutions, and express new ideas
and recent successes with their peers. All convention attendees (teachers as
well as students) enjoy a banquet lunch. The time together is used to
introduce the faculty and the convention and pageant chairmen. The Fall
Convention is also the location of our first Grand Body Meeting of the year.
This is a business meeting where members are informed of the latest news,
both locally and nationally. Necessary discussions and decisions take place
here. Members are required to attend two out of three Grand Body Meetings
each year to remain eligible to participate in any competitions. The Petite
Miss, Master, Junior Miss & Mister, Teen Miss & Mister, and Miss
& Mister Dance of South Carolina Scholarship Competition is held during
the convention weekend. This solo title competition is open only to students
of members in good standing with Southern Council of Dance Masters of
America, Inc.
WINTER WORKSHOP
In late January or early February, our members, assistants, and senior
students are invited to our Winter Workshop. This educational weekend is
usually held at a member's studio anywhere across the state. We bring in a
nationally known teacher for this occasion. Each year we try to rotate the
focus among the various styles of dance. THE WINTER WORKSHOP IS FREE TO ALL
ACTIVE MEMBERS OF OUR CHAPTER. A second Grand Body Meeting occurs at the
workshop.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Our scholarship fund is supported by member donations and raffle ticket
sales. At both the Fall and Spring Conventions, raffle tickets are sold for
prizes donated by local businesses and members of our chapter. It is
requested that each member pre-sell twenty tickets and secure a donated
prize. Senior Scholarship Auditions are held during the Winter Workshop, and
Junior Scholarship Auditions are held during the Spring Convention. Students
audition in four subject areas: tap, jazz, ballet, and acrobatics. A student
may choose individual subjects or choose all four. Winners are awarded in
each subject and overall. Future plans are to establish a college
scholarship for members and/or their students. Another future goal is to
increase the amount of scholarships awarded.
PERFORMING ARTS COMPETITION
Each year at our Spring Convention students of members in good standing are
eligible to participate in a Performing Arts Competition. In addition to
being an exciting weekend, it is a major fund-raiser for our non-profit
organization.
SPRING CONVENTION
Held in conjunction with the Performing Arts Competition, this allows our
members and their students another chance to take classes and enhance their
skills. All students participating in the competition must be pre-registered
for and attend the workshop. Our third Grand Body Meeting is held this
weekend. Elections for our Board of Directors is held every two years at the
Spring Convention. There are eight elected board positions.
SYLLABUS STUDY & EXAMINATIONS
Members in all areas of the state are available to assist interested dance
educators in preparing for exams. A formal review session is offered as
needed at the Fall Convention. Members of the examination committee are
available to administer exams at all conventions or other times as needed.
