STEPS IN BECOMING A DMMA MEMBER
1. Eligibility: You are eligible to apply for membership in Dance Masters of Mid-America if:
You are at least 1 8 years of age. You have taught in a dance school or operated your own dance school for at least three years.
You have established a track record of ethical practices as a dance educator.
Two members of our chapter in good standing sponsor you.
2. Application: Complete your National DMA application and chapter DMMA member questionnaire. (Make sure that your application contains the signatures of two sponsors from our chapter.) Mail your completed application and questionnaire to the DMMA Chapter Secretary.
3. Approval: Your application and questionnaire will be presented to the chapter at the next regularly scheduled chapter meeting following receipt of your application and questionnaire. Chapter meetings are held in January, February, March, April, June, August, September, October, and November/December. Your interest in membership will be noted in the chapter meeting minutes. At the next chapter meeting we will vote on your application. It you receive a two-thirds vote of the members present, you will be approved for membership.
4. Testing: You must pass examinations in at least two fields of dance that you teach. If you teach ballet at any level, you must take the ballet exam. Your other exam may be in a subject of your choice, including tap, jazz, acrobatic-gymnastics, or modem dance.
Register with the Chapter Secretary the month during which you want to take your tests. Tests are given the last Friday of February, June, or October. (Unless you receive a waiver from the chapter board of officers, you have one year from the date of your approval by the chapter to take your examinations.) You do not have to take both tests on the same day. We recommend that you order from National DMA or from Treasurer Betty Hill educational materials to help you study for your tests. For the ballet, jazz, and tap exams, additional resource books are available, and in some cases required.
Two official” examiners' from our chapter
will test you. A 75% score is required for you to pass each exam. We will call you within a day or so of your exams to let you know whether you have passed. For most dance educators who have studied the DMA syllabus books and who are knowledgeable teachers, it is not a major obstacle to pass the exams! (if you don't pass an exam, you may retake the exam in three months.) After your exams, your examiners will send you a written summary of your test results.
5. Initiation: As soon as you complete
step 4, you are considered an official member of our chapter. You will be put on our membership roster and will be eligible to enjoy all benefits of membership. You will be initiated as a member of our chapter at our next initiation. We hold initiation ceremonies at our August Annual Meeting, at our Fall Convention in November, and at our December Christmas Party.
We
encourage you to become a member of this outstanding dance organization and
hope you will become an active participant with the Dance Masters of
Mid-America and Dance Masters of America, Inc. For a membership
